Several years ago, while running down Mount Maroon in Southeast Queensland, I quite literally crossed paths with someone who would unknowingly influence the direction of my life.
He was running up the mountain — strong, energised, and radiating vitality. In his 50s, yet easily mistaken for someone in his late 30s. We struck up a brief conversation, and he shared that he worked as a Support Worker on the Gold Coast. At the time, it felt like nothing more than a pleasant exchange between two mountain runners. In hindsight, it planted a seed that would surface two years later.
Tighernach or T is a business executive and certified Autism Development Coach. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce, he moved to Australia to forge a career in business development for large multinational technology software and consulting organisations.
After 15 years of receiving developmental and executive coaching he has developed the interpersonal, intrapersonal and executive functioning skills, emotional awareness, and self-knowledge to offer a unique platform to support others. He has found his distinctive skill set has proven extremely valuable to adolescents with autism struggling to navigate this complex period of life.
Developmental coaching is deeply relational and focused on creating space for others to be fully themselves – it is not about fixing people! It requires the coach have wiped and continues to wipe, their own attachments, prejudices, biases, judgements, and opinions from their perspective on how humans ‘should’ be and adopt a position of neutrality. Neutrality does not mean ‘everything goes’, boundaries, safety concerns, and ethical positions may still be required - it means observing situations without getting pulled into emotional entanglements. It is this neutral conscious presence that is the transformative oil.
Developmental coaching is very different from traditional coaching, performance coaching or executive coaching. It is deeply neuro-affirming, strength-based, holistic and collaborative. The coach walks alongside the individual, not ahead! It frames autism as a natural and meaningful expression of human diversity.
This perspective centres dignity, acceptance, and access to support without demanding conformity. Instead of pathologizing differences, it acknowledges that autistic individuals may engage with the world in non-normative ways that reflect insight, competence, and creativity. Many autistic people who embrace this understanding report a stronger self-concept, enhanced emotional wellbeing, and a greater sense of empowerment.
Its focus is on crafting lives that align with the individual’s values, sensory preferences and cognitive styles.
