the BEHAVIOURAL

The Behavioural focuses on understanding the internal patterns of thinking, the external subjective or objective stimuli that impact our behaviour and the outwardly expression of that internal state -  instinctual or intentional. It also encompasses the behaviours or habits that lead to healthy development,  or unhealthy stagnation or regression.

Our behaviors and habitual patterns shape how others perceive us and influence the image we project. This image is then mirrored back to us by others, relatives and strangers alike. Therefore, a repertoire of problematic or harmful behaviours leads to a mirrored negative image, which is typically internatised by the individual -affecting their sense-of-self. The opposite is also true, positive behaviour lead to a positive reflection.

It can be the case where regardless of one's behaviour, someone may project their own internal self-image onto this unfortunate individual leading to confusion and cognitive dissonance.

Therefore, it is very important that 'positive' behaviours and habits are encouraged, developed and mirrored appropriately, and 'negative' behaviours are tackled or navigated strategically & delicately - separating the individual from the behaviour.

Some behaviours may be as a consequence of a medical diagnosis, but many behaviours are often due to development delay in emotional intelligence.

Observing how the individual engages & reacts/responds during certain exercises, tasks, environments, social encounters, expectations, boundaries can provide the opportunity to support the individual become aware of their behaviours and create the platform to influence change.

Encouraging Healthy Habits

There is an innate human tendency to imitate others, and unconsciously mirror the steps of those around us. The Social Learning Theory (Monkey See, Monkey Do) suggests that we copy others in order to learn how to behave - predominantly driven by evolutionary forces. We support individuals by firstly being acutely mindful of our own speech and actions. It is often through these non-direct, subtle practices, where we see profound results! We also actively promote and encourage the adoption of healthy habits which improve well-being and overall development. Simple habits such as drinking more water, switching from 'Mountain Dew' to 'Kombucha', washing hands with soap, to perhaps sometimes more trickier habits such as 'inhaling deeply when feeling dysregulated' to 'communicating needs'.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Research suggests that children with autism interact and engage more in the presence of therapy animals, leading to better communication skills and prosocial behaviors. Studies have shown that individuals with autism look at dog's faces longer than human faces, suggesting that they feel safer and more comfortable with our furry friends. Our dog Kali is a beautiful well trained Labrador cross (Retriever) who loves attention, snacks chasing a ball, and water (except for baths which tests all my abilities)

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an individualised and comprehensive approach that is used to guide children towards new ways to behave. This approach reduces harmful behaviors by eliminating triggers and reinforcements, while teaching positive alternatives to replace challenging actions. PBS has been proven to:

  • improve a child's school performance
  • help children communicate
  • reduce an individual's aggression towards themselves and others
